[23] Alaska CPAs allow pharmacists to monitor „drug treatment“ according to 12 AAFC 52,995, which includes performing a complete patient history, measuring vital signs, and ordering and evaluating CPA-covered laboratory tests. [23] [24] CPAs are at the centre of advocacy efforts for professional pharmacy organizations. In January 2012, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) brought together a consortium of pharmaceutical, medical and nursing stakeholders from 12 states to discuss the integration of CPAs into daily clinical practice. [53] The consortium published a white paper entitled „Consortium Recommendations for Advancing Pharmacists` Patient Care Services and Collaborative Practice Agreements“ summarizing its recommendations. [18] In 2012, the AAFP produced a position paper expressing its support for CPAs,[59] but highlighted the risk of fragmentation of care if pharmacists are granted fully autonomous prescribing privileges. [60] „It is important to recognize that efforts to achieve federal supplier status will be a multi-year effort, so we need the involvement of pharmacists in the long term. We need pharmacists to be involved in the federal campaign, but their involvement at the state level is just as important,“ said Stacie Maass, BSPharm, JD, Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Practice and Government Affairs at APhA. „The progress that pharmacists and their national associations have made and will make for our profession at the state level is what national pharmacy organizations highlight in our meetings with members of Congress. [Pharmacists and their national associations] make the delivery and benefits of patient care by pharmacists real. In the keynote address at the 2013 APhA Annual Meeting, Reid Blackwelder, President of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)[57], advocated a „collaborative vision of health care.“ [58] Since 2013, several states have seen progress in pharmacists` ability to work with physicians and other prescribing physicians to provide advanced patient care.

Currently, 48 states and the District of Columbia allow some degree of collaborative practice agreements between pharmacists and other health care providers. Kansas, with the signing of Senate representation for HB 2146 on April 10, 2014, increased the total from 47 to 48. Once authorized by the Board of Pharmacy, PhAs can conduct patient examinations, refer patients to providers, and work with other health care providers to manage patients` medical conditions by optimizing drug treatments. This includes the initiation, adjustment and discontinuation of drugs in accordance with the protocol established by the specific organization they are working on. [30] The APh certification is valid for 2 years as long as the pharmacist`s license is active and the pharmacist must complete at least 10 additional hours of training every 2 years. [29] CPAs have been implemented for the treatment of various chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, asthma and high blood pressure. There is evidence that CPAs have led to positive health outcomes for affected patients. .
